This rule looks for true astronomical night, cloud cover no higher than 20%, visibility of at least 12 km, precipitation probability no higher than 10%, and either Moon illumination no higher than 35% or Moon altitude no higher than 10°. It does not calculate Galactic Centre or Milky Way core altitude; check a sky planner for the subject's position.
High Alpine elevation can place photographers above valley haze, with the Matterhorn above Zermatt, glaciers around Saas-Fee, and the Engadin near St. Moritz providing strong mountain foregrounds. The darkest results come on moonless, transparent nights away from resort lighting; snow and a bright moon can instead illuminate peaks but wash out faint stars. Summer gives Milky Way core opportunities, while winter has longer darkness and much harsher access.
The forecast tracks astronomical darkness, cloud, and visibility, not local light spill or sudden summit cloud. Cable cars usually stop before the darkest hours, many glaciers are unsafe without a guide, and cold drains batteries quickly. Use established paths, verify avalanche conditions, and choose a reachable valley or village-edge composition rather than relying on remote high-altitude access.
