Alaska astrophotography forecast for Denali, Coldfoot, and the dark Interior, tracking cloud, visibility, moonlight, and astronomical darkness.

This rule looks for true astronomical night, cloud cover no higher than 20%, visibility of at least 12 km, precipitation probability no higher than 10%, and either Moon illumination no higher than 35% or Moon altitude no higher than 10°. It does not calculate Galactic Centre or Milky Way core altitude; check a sky planner for the subject's position.

Alaska's dark-sky forecast looks for clear, transparent hours when moonlight and twilight will not overwhelm stars. Coldfoot and the Dalton Highway offer very little artificial light, while Denali and Talkeetna pair northern skies with Alaska Range foregrounds.

Season matters more here than at lower latitudes. Astronomical darkness returns in late August and lasts into April, but the midnight sun prevents conventional deep-sky work around the summer solstice. Snow can brighten the ground and reflect nearby light, and aurora may compete with planned Milky Way exposures even on otherwise clear nights.

Coldfoot is the strongest choice for a remote Arctic composition, but road conditions, sparse services, and extreme cold require self-sufficiency. Around Fairbanks and North Pole, drive beyond local light domes before exposing. Denali viewpoints can close or become inaccessible in winter, so the forecast indicates sky quality rather than road or park access. Keep batteries insulated and check local travel advisories before leaving maintained roads.

How this forecast is made

Opportunities are threshold-based signals: PhotoWeather checks whether forecast conditions match the rules for a photography scenario. They are planning guidance, not guarantees. Forecasts can change as new model runs arrive, and confidence generally decreases farther into the forecast horizon, so recheck conditions before travelling.

The weather forecast foundation comes through Open-Meteo , which aggregates models from weather agencies. PhotoWeather applies condition-specific thresholds and derived calculations; not every condition uses every model or data input.
