New Zealand astro forecast for Milky Way photography in the Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve around Lake Tekapo and Mount Cook.

This rule looks for true astronomical night, cloud cover no higher than 20%, visibility of at least 12 km, precipitation probability no higher than 10%, and either Moon illumination no higher than 35% or Moon altitude no higher than 10°. It does not calculate Galactic Centre or Milky Way core altitude; check a sky planner for the subject's position.

This forecast evaluates astronomical darkness, cloud cover, visibility, precipitation risk, and moonlight in the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve. Lake Tekapo's shore, Lake Pukaki, and the Hooker Valley place the southern Milky Way above glacial water and the silhouette of Aoraki/Mount Cook. The rule does not calculate Galactic Centre altitude, so use a sky planner to confirm its position for a composition.

Dark-sky status does not guarantee clear weather: Southern Alps cloud can build quickly, wind can ripple lake reflections, and a bright Moon washes out faint Milky Way structure. The Church of the Good Shepherd has lighting restrictions and heavy visitor pressure, so obey barriers and avoid torches that spoil others' exposures. Alpine nights are cold even outside winter, reducing battery life.
