Aurora Forecast - Scotland
Northern Lights forecast for Scotland. Track aurora at Isle of Skye, Cairngorms, Shetland with lochs, castles and standing stones.
This forecast answers the question every aurora photographer asks: "Can I actually see the aurora tonight?" Unlike simple Kp forecasts, we combine NOAA's OVATION aurora model with real-time cloud cover, visibility, and darkness data to predict true viewing conditions.
Scotland offers the best aurora viewing in the British Isles. The Shetland Islands, at 60°N, sit at a similar latitude to Bergen, Norway, and regularly see aurora displays. Even the Scottish mainland, from the Highlands to the Borders, can experience spectacular shows during strong geomagnetic events.
What makes Scotland special for aurora photography:
- Northern latitude - Shetland and Orkney are Britain's closest points to the auroral oval
- Dramatic foregrounds - Ancient standing stones, castles, lochs, and rugged coastline
- Dark Sky Parks - Cairngorms and Galloway Forest offer protected dark skies
- Island isolation - Minimal light pollution on the Western and Northern Isles
Aurora viewing in Scotland peaks September through March. Cloud cover is the main challenge—our forecast helps you identify the rare clear nights when aurora activity coincides with good visibility. The Cairngorms' position often places it above low cloud, and the Northern Isles can clear when the mainland is overcast.
