Adding Locations

Locations are where you want to monitor weather conditions for photography. Add specific spots you shoot at regularly to get weather alerts when conditions match your preferences.

Locations are your photography spots where PhotoWeather monitors weather conditions. Each location includes:

  • Custom name - to easily identify your photography spots
  • GPS coordinates - for accurate weather monitoring
  • Weather rules - define what conditions you want to be notified about
  1. Click “Add Location” from your locations page
  2. Type a location name in the search box (minimum 3 characters)
  3. Select from search results - search worldwide locations
  4. Give it a custom name - something descriptive for your photography spot
  5. Save the location

Location search supports:

  • City and landmark names
  • Administrative regions
  • Multi-language search results

For precise or remote locations:

  1. Click “Add Location”
  2. Use manual coordinate entry section
  3. Enter coordinates in decimal format (e.g., 37.8199, -122.4783)
    • Get coordinates from Google Maps: right-click any location and copy the coordinates
    • Use the first number for latitude, second for longitude
  4. Name your location
  5. Save the location

If your browser supports geolocation:

  1. Click “Add Location”
  2. Use “Get Current Location” if available
  3. Allow location access when prompted
  4. Review coordinates and adjust if needed
  5. Name and save the location

When you add a location, PhotoWeather automatically fills in details like:

  • Country, region, and city information
  • Timezone for accurate sunrise/sunset times
  • Elevation when available
  • Active locations: Currently monitored for weather conditions and generate alerts
  • Inactive locations: Saved but not monitored (useful for seasonal spots)

Toggle locations between active and inactive as needed. Only active locations count toward your subscription limits.

For managing multiple locations, organizing rules, and understanding subscription limits, see our Multiple Locations guide.

For each active location, PhotoWeather tracks:

  • Weather conditions - temperature, wind, cloud cover, precipitation, and visibility
  • Astronomical periods - sunrise/sunset, golden hour, blue hour, and twilight periods
  • Moon phases and lunar illumination
  • Weather forecasts for up to 7 days ahead

Weather data updates hourly to keep your alerts accurate and timely.

For naming best practices, troubleshooting location issues, and weather accuracy information, see our troubleshooting guide.

Once you have locations set up:

  1. Create weather rules to define the conditions you want to monitor
  2. Associate rules with locations to enable targeted monitoring
  3. Set up notifications to receive alerts for matching conditions
  4. Subscribe to calendar feeds for integration with your calendar app

The system will automatically start monitoring weather conditions for your active locations and evaluate your rules to identify photography opportunities.
