Astrophotography in Swedish Lapland. Find dark, transparent nights around Abisko, Torneträsk, Riksgränsen, and remote Porjus.

This rule looks for true astronomical night, cloud cover no higher than 20%, visibility of at least 12 km, precipitation probability no higher than 10%, and either Moon illumination no higher than 35% or Moon altitude no higher than 10°. It does not calculate Galactic Centre or Milky Way core altitude; check a sky planner for the subject's position.

Swedish Lapland's sparse settlement and broad northern horizons make it strong for deep-sky and winter-star compositions. Abisko and Torneträsk pair dark skies with mountain silhouettes, Riksgränsen adds sharper alpine relief, and Porjus offers quieter forest and reservoir foregrounds away from Kiruna's light.

The usable dark season extends from late August into April; midnight sun prevents summer astrophotography. Abisko's rain-shadow improves the odds but does not guarantee a cloudless frame, and aurora or a bright moon can overpower faint Milky Way structure. On Torneträsk, treat ice access as a local safety decision and protect equipment from severe cold and indoor condensation.

Abisko

Inactive

Abisko frames Lake Torneträsk with mountain birch, the U-shaped Lapporten valley, and broad northern skies often sheltered by a rain shadow.

Right now: Total Cloud Coverage too high (100%, ≤ 20.0%)

View forecast

Björkliden

Inactive

Björkliden overlooks Torneträsk from birch-covered slopes, with Lapporten and surrounding peaks forming layered lake-and-mountain compositions.

Björkliden, Norrbotten, Sweden

Right now: Total Cloud Coverage too high (100%, ≤ 20.0%)

Kiruna

Inactive

Kiruna sits amid low mountains, boreal forest, and mine-shaped terrain, with open country beyond town providing dark skies and winter forms.

Kiruna, Norrbotten, Sweden

Right now: Visibility too low (2km, ≥ 12000.0m)

View forecast

Jukkasjärvi

Inactive

Jukkasjärvi lines the Torne River with timber buildings and the seasonal ICEHOTEL, adding carved ice and river textures to winter scenes.

Jukkasjärvi, Norrbotten, Sweden

Right now: Total Cloud Coverage too high (100%, ≤ 20.0%)

View forecast

Riksgränsen

Inactive

Riksgränsen sits on the Norwegian border where the railway crosses a high, treeless mountain pass rather than a forested river valley. Rounded peaks, deep snowfields, and rapidly arriving maritime cloud give the settlement a distinctly alpine visual character.

Riksgränsen, Norrbotten, Sweden

Right now: Total Cloud Coverage too high (84%, ≤ 20.0%)

View forecast

Torneträsk

Inactive

Torneträsk extends for roughly 70 kilometres through a mountain trough, creating a much longer horizon than Swedish Lapland’s forest lakes. Winter turns that corridor into a pale plane of fractures and pressure ridges beneath the dark walls of Abisko’s mountains.

Abisko, Norrbotten, Sweden

Right now: Total Cloud Coverage too high (100%, ≤ 20.0%)

View forecast

Gällivare

Inactive

Gällivare lies below Dundret, whose summit views take in forest, lakes, mining landscapes, and the distant mountain edge of Laponia.

Gällivare, Norrbotten, Sweden

Right now: Visibility too low (1km, ≥ 12000.0m)

View forecast

Jokkmokk

Inactive

Jokkmokk combines a compact timber town with frozen lakes and pine forest, while its winter market adds Sámi craft, dress, and reindeer subjects.

Jokkmokk, Norrbotten, Sweden

Right now: Total Cloud Coverage too high (100%, ≤ 20.0%)

View forecast

Porjus

Inactive

Porjus grew beside a major hydroelectric station on the regulated Lule River, so dams, transmission structures, and reservoir shorelines define its foregrounds. Sparse boreal forest and the broad water or winter ice lead west toward the less developed mountain landscapes of Laponia.

Porjus, Norrbotten, Sweden

Right now: Total Cloud Coverage too high (100%, ≤ 20.0%)

Luleå

Inactive

Luleå’s low Baltic archipelago freezes into ice routes and snow-covered islands, contrasting harbour structures with an unusually flat Arctic seascape.

Luleå, Norrbotten, Sweden

Right now: Total Cloud Coverage too high (100%, ≤ 20.0%)

How to read: Each row shows when a condition blocks opportunities. Stronger red means more locations are affected. These are the top 5 conditions preventing matches across the 93-hour forecast.

How this forecast is made

Opportunities are threshold-based signals: PhotoWeather checks whether forecast conditions match the rules for a photography scenario. They are planning guidance, not guarantees. Forecasts can change as new model runs arrive, and confidence generally decreases farther into the forecast horizon, so recheck conditions before travelling.

The weather forecast foundation comes through Open-Meteo , which aggregates models from weather agencies. PhotoWeather applies condition-specific thresholds and derived calculations; not every condition uses every model or data input.
