The Smokies generate their own weather. Dense forests release moisture through transpiration, creating the persistent haze that appears as blue smoke from a distance. Add morning temperature inversions, and valleys like Cades Cove become fog-filled bowls with mountain ridges emerging from the mist. This phenomenon occurs year-round but peaks during autumn when humidity remains high and temperatures drop.

What makes Smoky Mountains fog photography exceptional:

Best fog occurs on clear, calm nights followed by sunny mornings, typically September through November. Arrive at Cades Cove before dawn to catch fog at its thickest.
