This forecast answers the question every aurora photographer asks: "Can I actually see the aurora tonight?" Unlike simple Kp forecasts, we combine NOAA's OVATION aurora model with real-time cloud cover, visibility, and darkness data to predict true viewing conditions.

Scotland offers the best aurora viewing in the British Isles. The Shetland Islands, at 60°N, sit at a similar latitude to Bergen, Norway, and regularly see aurora displays. Even the Scottish mainland, from the Highlands to the Borders, can experience spectacular shows during strong geomagnetic events.

What makes Scotland special for aurora photography:

  • Northern latitude - Shetland and Orkney are Britain's closest points to the auroral oval
  • Dramatic foregrounds - Ancient standing stones, castles, lochs, and rugged coastline
  • Dark Sky Parks - Cairngorms and Galloway Forest offer protected dark skies
