Kinderdijk's 19 UNESCO windmills rising from morning mist create one of photography's most iconic Dutch scenes. The flat terrain and extensive water networks mean fog forms readily on calm, clear nights and can persist well into morning. Marken's historic harbor on the Markermeer lake experiences frequent sea fog rolling in from the IJsselmeer.

Best fog occurs on calm, clear nights following daytime warmth—typically spring and autumn. Arrive before sunrise to catch densest conditions. The polders around Kinderdijk, Zaanse Schans windmills north of Amsterdam, and the Alblasserwaard region are prime locations. Fog typically burns off by 10-11 AM as temperatures rise.
