Astrophotography in Finnish Lapland. Find dark, transparent nights at Utsjoki, Kilpisjärvi, and Lake Inari outside the bright summer and aurora glow.

This rule looks for true astronomical night, cloud cover no higher than 20%, visibility of at least 12 km, precipitation probability no higher than 10%, and either Moon illumination no higher than 35% or Moon altitude no higher than 10°. It does not calculate Galactic Centre or Milky Way core altitude; check a sky planner for the subject's position.

Finnish Lapland has genuinely dark horizons, but useful astrophotography requires more than a clear icon. This forecast looks for darkness, low cloud, good visibility, and limited moon interference at remote sites around Utsjoki, Kilpisjärvi, and Lake Inari. Open frozen lakes can provide broad skies in midwinter; Kaunispää offers elevation but is more exposed to wind.

The practical window runs from late August into April. Summer's midnight sun removes astronomical darkness, and active aurora can overwhelm faint Milky Way detail. In deep winter, allow batteries and lenses to acclimatize, watch for condensation when returning indoors, and verify ice access locally rather than assuming a frozen-looking lake is safe.

Location status

0 of 13 locations currently active

Saariselkä

Inactive

Rounded fells and snow-draped pine forest surround Saariselkä, while open views from Kaunispää reveal layered ridges and broad aurora skies.

Saariselka, Lapland, Finland

Right now: Total Cloud Coverage too high (99%, ≤ 20.0%)

View forecast

Inari

Inactive

Lake Inari supplies island-dotted horizons, winter ice patterns, and dark northern skies; autumn mist often separates the wooded shores at dawn.

Inari, Lapland, Finland

Right now: Total Cloud Coverage too high (100%, ≤ 20.0%)

View forecast

Kilpisjärvi

Inactive

Saana fell rises abruptly above Kilpisjärvi’s tundra lake and sparse mountain birch, giving the village stronger alpine relief than most of Finnish Lapland. The nearby Malla reserve opens westward toward the Scandinavian mountain chain and the meeting point of Finland, Sweden, and Norway.

Kilpisjärvi, Lapland, Finland

Right now: Total Cloud Coverage too high (35%, ≤ 20.0%)

Muonio

Inactive

The Muonio River marks Finland’s border with Sweden beside low boreal forest, supplying reflective bends and autumn mist close to town. Eastward, the higher Pallas fells introduce long treeless ridges above the forest line.

Muonio, Lapland, Finland

Right now: Total Cloud Coverage too high (100%, ≤ 20.0%)

Utsjoki

Inactive

The broad Teno River follows Finland’s northern border through steep, birch-covered fells around Utsjoki. Sparse settlement and the valley’s east–west reaches leave dark horizons, while river bends provide foregrounds for aurora and low Arctic light.

Utsjoki, Lapland, Finland

Right now: Astronomical Night: Outside time window

Rovaniemi

Inactive

The Kemijoki and Ounasjoki rivers meet at Rovaniemi, where bridges and winter ice provide distinctly urban Arctic foregrounds. Ounasvaara rises immediately east of the centre for views across the river junction, forest, and city lights.

Rovaniemi, Lapland, Finland

Right now: Total Cloud Coverage too high (100%, ≤ 20.0%)

View forecast

Sodankylä

Inactive

Sodankylä sits among pine forest and the Kitinen River, offering river mist, snow-laden woodland, and dark skies beyond the town centre.

Sodankylä, Lapland, Finland

Right now: Total Cloud Coverage too high (100%, ≤ 20.0%)

Ivalo

Inactive

Ivalo combines the winding Ivalojoki River with low pine-covered hills, and serves as a practical base for Lake Inari’s wider ice landscapes.

Ivalo, Lapland, Finland

Right now: Total Cloud Coverage too high (99%, ≤ 20.0%)

View forecast

Luosto

Inactive

Old-growth spruce, rounded fell slopes, and views toward Pyhä-Luosto give Luosto graphic snow forms and long layers in low winter light.

Luosto, Lapland, Finland

Right now: Total Cloud Coverage too high (100%, ≤ 20.0%)

View forecast

Levi

Inactive

Levi fell rises directly above Sirkka’s ski village, with developed slopes giving accessible height over surrounding conifer forest and small lakes. Beyond the resort lights, the summit outlook resolves Lapland’s otherwise low relief into successive forested ridges.

Sirkka, Lapland, Finland

Right now: Total Cloud Coverage too high (100%, ≤ 20.0%)

Enontekiö

Inactive

Enontekiö stretches from the lake and fell landscape around Hetta to Finland’s narrow northwestern arm. That arm contains the country’s highest mountains, creating rocky, treeless horizons unlike the forested Ounasjoki headwaters farther south.

Enontekiö, Lapland, Finland

Right now: Total Cloud Coverage too high (100%, ≤ 20.0%)

Nellim

Inactive

Nellim’s eastern Lake Inari shore combines wooded islands, rocky coves, and broad dark horizons that work for mist, ice, and aurora reflections.

Nellimö, Lapland, Finland

Right now: Total Cloud Coverage too high (90%, ≤ 20.0%)

Kuusamo

Inactive

Kuusamo’s North Ostrobothnian forest-and-lake plateau is broken by Oulanka’s rapids, river bends, and exposed rock walls. Farther west, Riisitunturi’s hilltop spruce forest accumulates heavy crown snow that turns individual trees into sculptural winter subjects.

Right now: Total Cloud Coverage too high (100%, ≤ 20.0%)

How to read: Each row shows when a condition blocks opportunities. Stronger red means more locations are affected. These are the top 5 conditions preventing matches across the 92-hour forecast.

How this forecast is made

Opportunities are threshold-based signals: PhotoWeather checks whether forecast conditions match the rules for a photography scenario. They are planning guidance, not guarantees. Forecasts can change as new model runs arrive, and confidence generally decreases farther into the forecast horizon, so recheck conditions before travelling.

The weather forecast foundation comes through Open-Meteo , which aggregates models from weather agencies. PhotoWeather applies condition-specific thresholds and derived calculations; not every condition uses every model or data input.
