While Jordan is predominantly arid, storm events—though infrequent—create spectacular photography opportunities when they occur. Desert storms bring dramatic contrasts: dark clouds against red sandstone, lightning illuminating ancient ruins, and brief rain transforming normally dry wadis into temporary waterfalls. The convergence of Mediterranean weather systems with desert conditions occasionally produces towering cumulonimbus clouds and violent but photogenic thunderstorms.

Petra's narrow Siq canyon takes on moody character under storm clouds, with dramatic light when storms clear. From Karak Castle's elevated position, approaching storms across the Dead Sea rift valley create commanding views.
